Ventspils University College Award of the Year and the Christmas Ball

Thursday, December 15 at 19:00 at Ventspils Creative House, the Ventspils University College (VUC) “Award of the Year 2016” took place. The event this year was dedicated to the star theme, therefore throughout the course of the evening this year’s brightest stars (people and events at VUC) were honoured.

“Award of the Year” has already become VUC tradition and an integral event for both the teaching staff and the students, as every year the awards in multiple categories are handed out. Students and teaching staff were able to nominate candidates for the award in various nominations – “Patron of the Year”, “Lecturer of the Year”, “Student of the Year”, “Freshman of the Year”, “Humour of the Year”, “Event of the Year” and the “Trouble of the Year”. This year there new nominations were introduced – “International Student of the Year”, “Employee of the Year” and “Female Student of the Year”. Late associate professor Andris Klaus scholarship winners were also announced.

The “International Student of the Year 2016” is Nadejda Butova (Uzbekistan), 3rd year student of VUC Languages and Intercultural Communication programme. She is known for her strong sense of motivation, personal initiative, agreeable character, convivial personality and the adorable British accent. Other two nominees were Naduni Sugandika Bandara Samarakoon (Srilanka), 2nd year student of VUC Languages and Intercultural Communication programme and Dinara Sagat (Kazakhstan), exchange student at the VUC Business Administration programme.

“Student of the Year” – Faculty of Economics and Management student, Jurģis Pēteris Eglītis

“Female Student of the Year”- Faculty of Translation studies student, Anna Paula Gruzdiņa

“Freshman of the yeaR” – Faculty of Information Technologies student, Aleksis Lurins

“Humour of the Year” – Faculty of Information Technologies student, Andris Lanka

“Event of the Year” – Night Orientation

“Employee of the Year” – Vice Rector for Finance, Sniedze Šama

and last but definitely not the least “Patron of the year” – Ventspils City Council.

During the evening such artists as the JDK “Strautuguns”, Lorete Medne, VUC ensemble, Jöran Steinhauer from the group “Aarzemnieki”, Līga Zute together with Inetu Kronbergu and delighted the evening guests with their performances.

The award ceremony was followed by a free show “Discovering the Universe” and a movie “Dream to Fly” in the planetarium and finally by the annual Christmas ball.
