The Third Floor of the Ventspils University Student Dormitory has been Re-opened after Renovation

The opening ceremony of the 39 newly renovated rooms (with a total of 72 beds) on the third floor of the VUC student dormitory was held on September 5, 2017. The key speakers of the ceremony were the VUC Rector Kārlis Krēsliņš, the Chairman of the Ventspils City Council Aivars Lembergs and representatives of the VUC Student Council. In addition, the event was attended by the Wind Mother, a fictional dormitory administrator, who was giving out useful advice on how to improve the life in the dormitories.

In order to determine the necessity of improvements in the conditions of student life and studies in VUC, Ventspils Municipality organized several meetings with student representatives at the beginning of the year.

The costs of the repairs, purchase of furniture and equipment was fully covered by the EUR 270 730 funding granted by the Ventspils City Council.

In every room and in the hallway, the windows have been replaced and fitted with air inlet valves to improve the microclimate. Cable internet connection has been installed in all of the rooms together with more energy efficient LED lighting. Also, the rooms have been equipped with new furniture, window blinds and table lamps.

Four kitchens have been redecorated and modernised with new cooker hoods and a overhauled fire safety system. The dormitory has also taken into the account the need for storing food products and has started renting refrigerators.

In VUC dormitory, refitting of this scale has not taken place since year 2000. As things tend to become old and worn-out, it is planned to renovate the rest of the dormitory as well.
