Interuniversity Doctoral study programme “Linguistics: Latvian Diachronic Linguistics, Latvian Synchronic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Contrastive and Comparative Linguistics”
Interuniversity Doctoral study programme “Linguistics: Latvian Diachronic Linguistics, Latvian Synchronic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Contrastive and Comparative Linguistics” (number of the programme 51222, accredited till December 31, 2017) is implemented by two partner universities:

Aims and tasks of the programme
Aims of the interuniversity programme “Linguistics” implemented by Liepaya University and Ventspils University College:
- to provide scientific and academic succession in the field of Linguistics by granting a possibility to the graduates of the programme to become a part of Latvian and international scientifical turn-round, and use their knowledge in different fields, where doctoral degree in philology is necessary or preferable;
- to carry out academic responsibilities and other responsibilities that require Doctoral degree and scientific qualification in Phylology;
- to broaden the research of Letonika (dictionary homepage), develop theoretical basis of translation science and new directions of constructive linguistics.
Tasks of the programme
The task of the programme is to provide doctoral students with the possibility to acquire the necessary knowledge in the program to gain Doctoral degree in Philology (Dr Philol.) and the respective intellectual, professional and practical abilities/proficiencies.
Implementation of the programme
The duration of the full time study programme is 3 years (maximal duration 5 years) and of the part time study programme it is 4 years (maximal duration 6 years). The study language is Latvian, but also English, French, German and Russian are used (mostly in foreign language studies).
Doctoral students receive 40 CP (60 ECTS) for a year of full time studies and 30 CP (45 ECTS) for part time studies. The total amount of credit points for the programme is 120 CP (180 ECTS).
The knowledge necessary for the programme is acquired in lectures, seminars, colloquiums, conferences, different projects and consultations with the teaching staff and independent studies. The most common ways to test the knowledge of doctoral students are examinations, tests (with differenced evaluation) and doctorate papers.

Doctorate Council
The Doctorate Council of linguistics in Liepaya University was confirmed in the meeting of the Senat in August 26, 2010. The Doctorate Council consists of teachinf staff from Liepaya University, University of Latvia and Ventspils University College. The chairman of the Council is Jānis Sīlis. The members of the Doctorate Council are Dr.habil.philol. Ojārs Bušs, Dr.habil.philol. Ilga Jansone, Dr.philol. Dzintra Lele-Rozentāle, Dr.philol. Ieva Ozola, Dr.philol. Dzintra Šulce. The composition of the Doctorate Council can be changed with a instruction from the rector before any presentation and the Council can be supplemented with linguistic experts approved by Latvian Council of Science (LCS).

The following experts of linguistics are approved by LCS and are taking part in the programme: Dz. Lele-Rozentāle (expert status till 11.05.2013.), I. Ozola (till 03.07.2012.), J. Sīlis (till 12.05.2012.), Dz. Šulce (till 03.07.2012.).
