Ventspils University College has been performing scientific activities since 1997, when it was founded.
In the early years VUC received financial support from European Union by taking part in different EU cooperation and science projects. Science was developed thanks to the initiative of lecturers and members of the staff; however, VUC was growing and expanding the amount of the research projects, thus arose the necessity to set up framework for scientific activities.
In the September 2002 VUC Science and Development Department was established. The main task of the department is to coordinate scientific activities in the structural units of VUC. Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (founded in 2004) and Applied Linguistics Center (founded in 2007) now both develop and run science projects. Financial support from EU is received through different projects, which are co-financed by ERDF and other EU funds.
Ventspils University College has been participating in various projects and trying to develop VIRAC into a research center that complies with the standards of EU. At the same time VUC is improving its facilities and providing its scientific institutions with modern equipment and laboratories for successful performance in the future.
The department was established on the 10th of September, 2003.
