Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, established in 1997, is a national higher education and science institution.
Scientific research, academic and vocational study programmes

The VUC Constitution of 13 December 2007 was approved by the Saeima (parliament) in the Law on the Constitution of Ventspils University College (“LV”, 208 (3784), 29 December 2007; Ziņotājs, 3, 14 February 2008); VUC was accredited as of 10 December 1999. (Accreditation form No. 014)

On 20 May 2013, VUC received the status of scientific institution (registered in the Registry of Scientific Institutions), confirming that it has fulfilled the national criteria for a scientific institution: at least half of all academic personnel are holders of a Doctor of Science degree, the higher education institution publishes scientific articles and has scientific infrastructure at its disposal, and so on.

The VUC has three faculties: the Faculty of Economics and Management, the faculty of Translation Studies, and the Faculty of Information Technology. Altogether, 14 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study programmes are available at the University College. Approximately 900 students are currently enrolled.

Ventspils University carries out research activities that are vital for society, ensuring the integration of science in the study process and the use of knowledge to benefit the national economy.

To develop and maintain up-to-date, high-quality higher education and research in the University College’s fields of academic activity – management, applied linguistics, computer science, information technologies, engineering, and radio astronomy – and to ensure the close functional interaction of these fields.

Objectives of the 2016–2020 strategy

The main objective is to promote the progress of the Ventspils University College as an internationally recognised Baltic-wide centre of higher education and science toward the status of a European university.

Integration of science and research in all directions of study and provision of excellence in science and international competitiveness in priority research areas: radio astronomy, astrophysics, astrochemistry, satellite technologies, smart engineering, entrepreneurship, regional economics, translation and applied linguistics, international projects, consortia of higher education projects, student and teacher mobility, promotion of scientific activities, and further development of doctoral studies in various directions. VIRAC’s (Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre) specialisation has always been processing, recording, converting, storing, and streaming weak, overlapping, complex signals.

Strengthening the importance of lifelong learning and ensuring supply thereof in line with people’s needs in the country and in the region, regularly monitoring labour market demands, and cooperating with educational institutions in providing lifelong learning programmes.

Cooperating with interested parties; strengthening cooperation at the national and regional levels; cooperating with entrepreneurs as future employers of graduates, in particular entrepreneurs from Ventspils; cooperating with national institutions, local governments of Ventspils city and Ventspils municipality, the Kurzeme planning region, VHTP, and VHTP Business incubator; cooperating with other Latvian universities and science centres.

Stabilising and expanding the University College’s international dimension in all areas of activity: establishing programmes to attract foreign students, attracting guest professors and visiting researchers, involving international organisations, cooperating with foreign universities, research institutes, and companies in the Baltic states, Europe and Asia, and being involved in international projects..

Developing human resources at Ventspils University College to ensure improvement in the quality of academic and administrative staff, increase the number of employees with Doctor of Science degrees, promote the passing down of experience to young scientists, develop doctoral and post-doctoral studies, invite guest scientists and exchange students, establish an international doctoral excellence scholarship, and send doctoral students, post-docs, and researchers to undergo training at leading EU research centres..

Strengthening VUC’s capacity and financial efficiency: improving resource management, implementing management of results, electronic administration, full accounting, and developing the VUC infrastructure.

Cooperating with the local government and companies of Ventspils

Ventspils University College provides institutions and companies of the Kurzeme Region and the Ventspils City Council with qualified employees and offers lifelong learning opportunities for various groups of people.

The Ventspils local government finances the attraction of highly qualified academic personnel and high-class industry specialists, scholarships for doctoral students and publishing of scientific and teaching materials, and co-finances various projects, sports and cultural events for students.

Entrepreneurs participate in the development, improvement and implementation of study programmes and courses as well as student apprenticeships in Ventspils, in Latvian and foreign companies and in commercial companies.
